According to the interim financials for Puma Energy Zambia PLC, a profit after tax amounting to K97.92 million was recorded for the half year ended 30 June 2026, compared with a loss after tax of K154.3 million for the corresponding period in 2025.

Further, the company’s stronger operational performance, with profit before finance costs, taxation, and exchange losses, increased to K203.18 million from an operating loss of K138.39 million in the corresponding period of the priority year.

Additionally, the performance was primarily driven by improved margins across all business segments and ongoing cost optimization. However, a check by the Zambian Business Times (ZBT) shows that despite the company posting a profit of K97 million, no dividend has been approved yet.

Oil Marketing Companies Association of Zambia President Dr. Kafula Mubanga has attributed the profits recorded by Puma Energy to the current policy framework in the energy sector favoring multinational oil marketing companies as opposed to local ones.

Speaking in an interview with Zambian Business Times-ZBT, Dr. Mulanga noted that the profit recorded by Puma can be driven by having enough fuel products compared to other companies, leading to increased revenue.

“One of the key reasons as to why Puma Energy has made those profit margins is simply because the current policy framework in the oil sector is actually favoring foreign OMC as opposed to local, and other reasons could technically be that the company had a lot of fuel products on the market compared to other OMCs, which is driven by market share increase with systems that are very adaptive to market conditions,” said Kafula.

He added that the company being able to move enough fuel products in the market and their rebate suspension of the waivers cumulatively gave the company an advantage in recording a positive margin in terms of profit.
