POLICE CHARGE 13 NRPUP SUPPORTERS AFTER UNAUTHORISED CAMPAIGN ROADSHOW TURNED VIOLENT

Police have charged 13 National Revolution Party United (NRPUP) supporters, who are members of the Tonse Alliance, with unlawful procession following violent incidents that occurred during campaign activities in Ndola on Thursday 23 July 2026.

Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the Tonse Alliance had notified police of its intention to hold presidential campaign rallies in Kafulafuta and Twapia. However, some supporters allegedly conducted unauthorised roadshows in Chifubu and Kawama townships without notifying the police as required by law.

Mr. Chilabi said when police officers moved in to ensure compliance with the law, some supporters allegedly became violent and started throwing stones at officers. Fourteen suspects were apprehended in connection with the incident.

He said 13 of the suspects, who are NRPUP supporters, have since been formally charged with unlawful procession under Sections 5 and 7 of the Public Order Act, Chapter 113 of the Laws of Zambia, read together with Sections 74 and 75 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87.

Mr. Chilabi added that the suspects have been released on police bond, while investigations into the matter are continuing.
