ON STEALING her friend’s five-month-old baby, 26-year-old Sylvia Sara Mwewa vanished from Chipata, and picked Chongwe District in Lusaka Province as her perfect place of hiding.

It is alleged that, on the last day of July 2026, Mwewa tricked her friend, a 16-year-old into believing that she was only playing with the child and later on feed it.

Basing her judgement on the friend’s past record of doing as she said, the teenage mother allowed the friend to walk away with the baby.

However, after hours elapsed, a motherly instinct kicked in.

She decided to visit her friend, and found that her friend and child were nowhere to be seen. Alarmed by this, she quickly informed neighbours who decided to report the matter to the Police.

Yesterday, August 3, Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba’s men led an operation that ended in a safe rescue of the five-month-old baby, who has since been reunited with its family and subsequently arrested the 26-year-old suspected baby thief.

Mweemba tells TV Yatu that, investigations into alleged child stealing, are ongoing and the juvenile victim is receiving the necessary support.
