A 65-year-old cyclist has sustained serious injuries after being hit by an unknown motorcyclist in a hit-and-run accident in Nyimba District.

Zambia Police Service Eastern Province Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba says the accident occurred on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, around 18:30 hours opposite Mount Meru Filling Station along the Great East Road in Nyimba Town.

The Nyimba Traffic Police recorded the accident involving an unknown motorcycle and an Atlas Gents bicycle ridden by Tamson Banda of Benny Village in Chief Ndake’s area.

Mr Mweemba said Banda was travelling from east to west when he was allegedly hit from behind by the motorcyclist, who was travelling in the same direction.

He said that the motorcyclist is suspected to have misjudged the clearance distance or speed before hitting the cyclist, causing him to fall from his bicycle.

Mr Mweemba said Banda sustained a deep cut to the head and general body pains and was admitted to Nyimba District Hospital for treatment.

“The bicycle was extensively damaged, while the extent of injuries sustained by the motorcyclist and damage to the motorcycle could not be established as the rider fled the scene immediately after the accident, “he said.

Mr Mweemba said his officers have since launched investigations and are working to identify and apprehend the motorcyclist.
