A 33-year-old man has died after being hit by a Howo truck in a road traffic accident in Bwiketo Area of Livingstone District.

The accident happened around 06:00 hours today along the Great North Road, about 40 kilometres from Livingstone Central Business District.

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo identified the deceased as Justin Munkombwe of Bwiketo Area.

Mr Namalongo said Mr Munkombwe sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot.

He said the body has since been deposited at Batoka Hospital Mortuary in Livingstone, awaiting post-mortem examination.

Mr Namalongo said the accident involved a Howo truck, registration number BCD 9071, driven by 41-year-old Bwalya Hagai of Garden House Compound in Lusaka.

He said the driver, who was travelling from north to south, escaped uninjured, while the truck was not damaged.

Mr Namalongo said preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when Mr. Munkombwe was crossing the road from the left to the right side and was hit by the truck.

He has since urged pedestrians to exercise caution when crossing roads and ensure that it is safe before stepping onto the roadway.

Mr Namalongo has also advised motorists to remain vigilant, particularly when approaching areas where pedestrians are likely to cross, and to reduce speed accordingly to prevent road traffic accidents.
