Democratic Union President Akim Anthony Njobvu says the 18 opposition persons detained at Mukobeko Maximum Prison are in high spirits and not on hunger strike as previously rumoured.

Njobvu, who visited the facility on Friday, also delivered reading materials to strengthen the inmates spiritually and called on Zambians to continue praying for them.

He said the core message from the visit was unity and peace.

“But what is important is the unity and peace of the country. This is the message that BM gave to me – that I must remind Zambians that what is very important is peace and unity in the country,” Njobvu said.

The opposition leader then appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to choose the path of reconciliation.

“I would like to make an appeal to the President, Mr Hakainde Hichilema. I know many voices are speaking in your ears but I would like to urge you to listen to the voice that is talking about peace and unity and reconciliation. That is the bigger thing, that is the greatest thing we can do for this country,” he said.

He said former Leader of the Opposition Brian Mundubile, who is among those he referenced, told him he is in prison because of his love for Zambia.

“My question is to the UPND administration – what are you going to do for the sake of this country? We do have personal interest as politicians but for the sake of the country what are you going to do?” he asked.

Njovu quoted Proverbs 10:12 – “Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all wrongs,” saying love must cover political wrongs to allow the country to heal.

“We only have one tribe which is Zambia. Let’s all speak this language of Zambia. We are not divided by tribe or by race but we are united. We are Zambians and we shall always be Zambians,” he added.
