State police disrupted a legally sanctioned political rally in Mongu on Wednesday, deploying a barrage of tear gas to disperse crowds gathered to hear leading presidential aspirants Brian Mundubile and Running Mate Makebi Zulu.

Following the disruption, a defiant Mundubile addressed a press conference, alleging that six snipers were hidden among the masked police, and vowed to continue providing an alternative voice for the Western Province despite the aggression.

The incident in Mongu, which followed similar disruptions during a roadshow in Kalabo, highlights a pattern of rising political violence and alleged voter intimidation ahead of the August 13th election.

While bookmakers view the race as a tight contest, reports suggest the state’s heavy-handed tactics are increasing support for Mundubile, who is gaining momentum among youth voters frustrated by the incumbent administration’s failure to address economic decline, tight cyber laws and crunching poverty.

Despite the threat of further violence, Mundubile’s team has confirmed they will continue their campaign in Mwandi on Thursday.
