The Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) has controversially awarded National League leaders Mufulira a 21-0 walkover win over Kitwe giants Diggers after the latter failed to provide a venue for their rescheduled match.

The decision has sparked debate in rugby circles with the league now past its mid-point.

According to ZRU Director of Rugby, George Funga, Diggers were unable to host the game at their home ground and did not secure an alternative.

“Diggers said they were unable to host the match. We told them to find an alternative venue after learning that their home ground was not available for this game,” Funga said.

As a result, the union awarded *free points to defending champions Mufulira.

However, Diggers Chairperson Sam Lukonde has described the ruling as “strange”, arguing his club was not properly informed.

“There was nothing on the fixture relating to that game,” Lukonde said.

The walkover has strengthened Mufulira’s grip on top spot.

Mufulira now leads the National League with 35 points from eight matches, seven points clear of second-placed Red Arrows.

Diggers remain 5th on 14 points from eight games.

In the other rescheduled fixture, former league champions Red Arrows edged Buffaloes 26-22.

Arrows’ points came from two tries, three penalties, one drop goal and two conversions.

Buffaloes responded with one converted try and five penalties.

The Soldiers, who have a game in hand, sit on 22 points after seven games.

With the 2026 league campaign now at the mid-point, the title race is shaping up between Mufulira and Red Arrows, while Diggers will look to recover ground amid the controversy.
