In a statement issued on Monday, the mining firm said the decision was made after “consultations with key stakeholders”.
“The decision follows consultations with key stakeholders and is intended to allow sufficient time for the completion of the necessary organisational and logistical arrangements for the successful staging of the tournament,” the statement read.
Mopani added that new dates for the competition will be communicated later.
“The revised dates for the two-legged competition will be announced in due course. All other tournament arrangements, including the participating teams, venues, prize money and charitable component, remain unchanged,” the statement continued.
The IRH–Mopani Challenge Cup is an annual pre-season football showpiece bankrolled by International Resources Holding (IRH), the majority shareholder in Mopani Copper Mines PLC.
“The IRH-Mopani Challenge Cup is an annual football competition funded by International Resources Holding (IRH), the majority shareholder in Mopani Copper Mines PLC. The competition features teams from Mopani-sponsored Nkana and Mufulira Wanderers football clubs,” the statement said.
The derby between Kitwe giants Nkana FC and Mufulira Wanderers FC is one of the most anticipated fixtures on the Zambian football calendar and is traditionally used to raise funds for charitable causes in the Copperbelt.
