MANSA RESIDENT PETITIONS ECZ TO RESTORE MANSA CENTRAL CONSTITUENCY NAME

Mansa, Luapula – 9 September 2026 — A Mansa resident and 2026 Mansa District Independent Mayoral Candidate, Alex Chenga Prince Mabumba VI, has petitioned the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to consider changing the name of Mansa East Constituency back to Mansa Central Constituency.

In a petition dated 7 September 2026, Chenga argues that the name Mansa Central has historical and geographical significance to the district and should be restored.

According to the petition, Mansa Central Constituency originally comprised 10 wards before the delimitation exercise, during which four wards were removed to create Mansa West Constituency.

Chenga maintains that the removal of the four wards did not fundamentally alter the identity or geographical significance of the remaining constituency to justify changing its established name from Mansa Central to Mansa East.

He further argues that Mansa District being the provincial headquarters of Luapula Province provides another reason for retaining the “Central” designation.

The petition cites several provincial headquarters across Zambia that have constituencies bearing the name “Central,” including Chipata Central, Kasama Central, Choma Central, Solwezi Central, Mongu Central, Chinsali Central, Kabwe Central, Ndola Central and Lusaka Central.

Chenga says restoring the name would preserve historical continuity and ensure that Mansa, as the provincial headquarters, is appropriately reflected among Zambia’s provincial headquarters with Central constituencies.

CALL FOR EXISTING BOUNDARIES TO REMAIN

In his request to the ECZ, Chenga has asked the Commission to review the decision that resulted in the renaming of the former Mansa Central Constituency as Mansa East.
