UPND CANDIDATE ERNEST LUFUNDA WITHDRAWS PETITION AGAINST TEMBO

United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate for Dag Hammarskjöld Constituency, Ernest Lufunda, has withdrawn the election petition challenging the election of National Reconciliation Party for National Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) President Ezra Tembo.

Mr. Tembo narrowly won the Dag Hammarskjöld parliamentary election by 26 votes, polling 5,320 votes against Mr. Lufunda’s 5,294 votes.

Mr. Lufunda subsequently petitioned the election in the Ndola High Court, challenging the outcome.

However, speaking during a press briefing at his residence in Ndola on Wednesday, Mr. Lufunda announced that he had withdrawn the petition following wider consultations with the party family and other stakeholders, saying he did not want the matter to hinder development in the constituency.

Mr. Lufunda has meanwhile appealed to newly elected Member of Parliament Ezra Tembo to work for all residents without segregation, saying the constituency has many developmental needs.

Mr. Lufunda has also clarified that he was not bought off to withdraw the petition, adding that he has never met Mr. Tembo at any point.
