The Magistrate Court in Kasama has sentenced a 31-year-old man of Kasama District to 12 months imprisonment for trafficking in drugs.

Before Senior Magistrate Willie Banda was Charles Kabwe who pleaded guilty to trafficking in drugs.

This was in a case that came up for presentation of facts in which Kabwe pleaded guilty to one count of drug trafficking contrary to Section 15 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 35 of the Laws of Zambia.

Facts before the court that on June 9, 2026, the now convict unlawfully did trafficked in narcotic drugs weighing 3.1 grams.

In mitigation, the convict pleaded with the court for leniency, saying he was still young and had an opportunity to reform.

He also told the court that he had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity thereby saving the courts time.

He further pleaded with the court to be given a second chance to become a law-abiding citizen.

In passing sentence Senior Magistrate Banda said he heard the convicts plea but that cases of drug trafficking have become rampant, thereby sentencing Kabwe to 12 months imprisonment.

Magistrate Band however, suspended the sentence on condition that the convict does not commit a similar offence during the suspension period.

The court further warned the convict that any further involvement in criminal activities could result in the suspended sentence being activated.

He also ordered that the said drugs be kept at the Drug Enforcement Commission.
