Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Director General, Webster Malido, has said his organisation is committed to encouraging excellence among the next generation of media and communication professionals.

Speaking when he presented awards to two outstanding Evelyn Hone College of Applied Arts and Commerce graduates in this year’s graduation ceremony, Mr Malido said awarding best performing students will help raise well-trained, ethical, and professional media practitioners.

The two graduates are Ronny Mukontwa, the best graduating student under the Diploma in Journalism and public Relations as well as Felistus Katwamba, best Diploma graduating student in Creative Digital Media.

He noted that even when the two students’ achievements were announced at the College’s graduation ceremony, IBA also had to seize the opportunity to recognise their hard work and academic excellence.

He said the skills developed through communication disciplines are vital to widen the media ecosystem and to the quality of content reaching the public.

Mr Malido further noted that Evelyn Hone College plays an important role in equipping young people with knowledge and skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the media industry hence rewarding the two students under the Media and Information Studies faculty.

He congratulated the two students for their achievements and urged them to responsibly use the skills they have acquired.

The IBA Director General also took time to hand over two cheques worth K2,000 each to Ronny Mukontwa, the best graduating student in Diploma in Journalism and public Relations and Felistus Katwamba, best Diploma graduating student in Creative Digital Media.

And Evelyn Hone College Principal, Charity Nyirongo, who was represented by Head of School for Media and Information Studies Sipo Kapumba, appreciated the long standing relationship between IBA and the college.

Ms Nyirongo said sponsoring best Diploma students in Journalism and Public Relations as well as Creative Digital Media is mutually beneficial as IBA is concerned with professionalism in the broadcasting sector while the College produces practitioners in the said disciplines.

She disclosed that the broadcasting sector has continued to provide employment for many of the graduates from the college.

And speaking after receiving the award, Felistus Katwamba, thanked the IBA, Evelyn Hone College Board and Lecturers and family members for supporting the two students’ academic journey.
