Zambia Tourism Agency (ZTA) Acting Chief Executive Officer, Herbert Maambo, has called on tourism establishments to obtain operating licences and undergo grading, to ensure that facilities meet required standards and provide quality services to both local and international tourists.

Mr Maambo said licencing and grading are critical to improving Zambia’s tourism standards and strengthening the country’s competitiveness as a preferred tourist destination.

He was speaking today during a media tourism training workshop, which was organised by ZTA.

Mr Maambo has since urged the media to educate the public and tourism operators on the importance of using licensed and graded facilities.

He disclosed that tourism establishments are required to renew their licences every three years, while grading is undertaken periodically to ensure that standards are maintained as requirements evolve.

“Accommodation establishments are graded using a one to five star system, covering hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfast facilities, lodges, safari and bush camps, camping sites, caravan parks, backpackers and self-catering establishments,” he explained.

Mr Maambo said maintaining internationally comparable standards is essential if Zambia is to attract more visitors and encourage tourists to return to the country.
