I WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE HICHILEMA LOSE THE ELECTION,” SAYS DR. CANISIUS BANDA.
Former United Party for National Development (UPND) Vice President for Politics, Dr. Canisius Banda, says he would be pleased to see President Hakainde Hichilema defeated in the upcoming general election, arguing that the Head of State has failed to deliver on the promises that brought him to power.
Dr. Banda, who left the UPND and later joined the Patriotic Front (PF), where he served as Chairperson for Health, claimed President Hichilema had not lived up to public expectations.
He said many Zambians had believed in the UPND’s campaign slogan, “Bally Will Fix It,” but alleged that the country’s challenges remained unresolved.
“For far too long we have been made to believe that he is capable of managing the affairs of the country. Others believed the ‘Bally Will Fix It,’ but what do we see now? The country has fixed him instead,” Dr. Banda said.
He further claimed that President Hichilema’s popularity had declined during his five years in office.
“I’m not surprised that the man has lost popularity among Zambians within a space of five years. That is what happens when you want to be President without a plan,” he said.
Dr. Banda also contrasted President Hichilema with other former presidents, saying they campaigned on their achievements, while alleging that the current President was still making promises.
He urged Zambians to support Toonse Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, describing him as a capable leader.
“We have a real chance to bring a competent team led by Brian Mundubile, a genuine lawyer and a father figure. Let us give him our vote because he deserves it,” he said.
Dr. Banda also accused the UPND of sponsoring political violence in some parts of the country, alleging that supporters of the ruling party had attacked political opponents.
“Where they have lost popularity, they are sending thugs to brutalize innocent people. People have been beaten at the hands of Hakainde Hichilema. This is sad for the country,” he alleged.
