Former Kamwala Ward Councillor and Kabwata aspiring Independent MP, Mainda Simataa, has announced his immediate retirement from active Zambian politics, citing fears for his safety amid what he described as a hostile political environment.

In a press statement released on 21.08.26, Simataa said his decision was not because he lost the Kabwata parliamentary seat in the recent elections.

“As many of you are aware, I recently ran for election as an Independent MP for Kabwata Constituency, and I lost. However, that temporary setback is not the reason for my early retirement from Zambian politics,” he stated.

Simataa said his main concern is personal safety and family.

“The thing is this: I am not prepared to lose my life over politics and leave my family behind. Unlike elections, there is no bouncing back from loss of life,” he said.

He added that the current political climate has become difficult for people like him.

“Therefore, given my analysis of the current hostile political environment which, in my view, has become too toxic, too intolerant, and even dangerous for politicians such as myself, I have chosen to step aside.”

Despite stepping down, Simataa said his love for the country remains.

“Zambia and its people are my first love, and even in retirement, there is always a part of me that will look behind and hope that all things work out for the best,” he said.

He thanked his supporters for standing with him during his campaign.

“I thank you all that have walked this journey with me. God bless you all, and God bless mother Zambia,” Simataa concluded.

His retirement comes few days after the death of former cabinet minister Mutotwe Kafwaya who was shot dead by Zambian special forces during a raid at Brian Mundubile’s residence.
