PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema described former Vice President Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott as a patriotic and selfless leader who “put the interests of Zambians first before his own.”

Speaking during the State Funeral Service for Dr. Scott, who died on June 15 at age 82, Hichilema said the late leader was consistent in placing national interest first.

“Guy Scott put country first,” Hichilema said. “An attribute worth emulating and an inspiration to the current generation.”

The President said Zambia had lost a man committed to constitutionalism and the rule of law. He noted Dr. Scott’s contribution to public service, democracy and unity “even amid turbulent times.”

Hichilema particularly praised Dr. Scott’s leadership following the death of President Michael Sata in 2014. As acting president during PF wrangles and political tension, Dr. Scott “managed the situation with calm and kept the nation together during the transition period,” Hichilema said.

The President also acknowledged Dr. Scott, an economist and agriculturalist, for choosing to serve Zambia despite having “the intellect and opportunity to work in any part of the world.”

“We are grateful to the service that he rendered to us with his skills, choosing to work for the public sector, superintending over this country at a time when he was needed most,” Hichilema said.

He extended condolences to Dr. Scott’s widow, Charlotte, and the family, saying the nation mourns “a patriot whose life was that of courage and unwavering love for Zambia and promotion of unity in diversity.”

Dr. Scott’s four children described him as a witty father who taught them humility and a sense of purpose.
