Political tensions are deepening in Tanzania following the sudden resignation, expulsion and reported disappearance of former Vice-President Emmanuel Nchimbi.

Just days after stepping down from office and being expelled from the ruling CCM party for alleged indiscipline, Nchimbi has reportedly become unreachable, fuelling speculation about his whereabouts.

Rights activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai claims the former vice-president has been placed under house arrest, had his communication devices confiscated and could be facing treason charges. Tanzanian authorities have not confirmed those allegations.

Adding to the mystery, former Prime Minister and Attorney General Joseph Warioba has reportedly disclosed that he has been unable to contact Nchimbi despite efforts to reach him.

The developments come as Tanzania’s Parliament unanimously approved former minister Deogratius Ndejembi as the country’s new Vice-President, swiftly filling the vacancy left by Nchimbi’s departure.

Political analysts say the dramatic resignation and expulsion of one of Tanzania’s most senior leaders has exposed tensions within the ruling establishment, while questions continue to mount over Nchimbi’s sudden silence.
