The Ministry of Information and Media says the Zambia Police Service was never informed that the National Revolution Party-UP (NRP-UP) intended to conduct a roadshow in Kalingalinga and Mtendere.
Speaking during a media briefing, Ministry Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana said the only official notification submitted to police was for a presidential rally at Heroes Stadium. He explained that the unexpected roadshow prompted police to intervene.
Mr. Kawana also dismissed reports that a person was killed during the incident. He said the girl who was injured was struck by a tear smoke canister, not a live bullet. According to him, she received medical treatment and was later discharged from hospital.
The Government’s clarification comes amid ongoing public and political debate over last week’s confrontation and the circumstances surrounding the police operation.
