BioCarbon Partners Chief Executive Officer Nic Mudaly, says the launch of Zambia’s National Carbon Registry will strengthen transparency, accountability and confidence in the country’s growing carbon market.

Mr Mudaly told the media that a robust national registry will provide greater visibility of carbon projects and credits being developed in Zambia, helping to build confidence among project developers, communities, buyers, investors and other stakeholders.

He noted that the registry is also critical towards supporting the integrity of Zambia’s carbon market by improving coordination and transparency across the sector.

He pointed out that Zambia’s developing carbon market presents an opportunity to mobilise climate financing at scale and channel investment, into projects that deliver measurable benefits for both people and nature.

“As Zambia seeks to attract increased climate finance, the regulatory and institutional framework must continue evolving to support high-quality carbon projects, protect environmental integrity and ensure benefits reach local communities,” added Mr Mudaly.

He also said a well-functioning National Carbon Registry will be an important component of Zambia’s broader climate and development ambitions, while providing greater confidence to international carbon-credit buyers.

Mr Mudaly has since welcomed the continued development of Zambia’s carbon market and pledged to work with government and other stakeholders to strengthen systems that can unlock the potential of climate finance for the country.

Meanwhile, Environmental Activist Conwell Hakapya says the establishment of Zambia’s National Carbon Registry will strengthen the regulation and standards governing carbon trading in the country.

Mr Hakapya said that the Registry is an important intervention that will bring proper regulation and oversight to Zambia’s growing carbon market, which has operated without a comprehensive national registry for some time.

He said the Registry will also contribute to climate action by ensuring that carbon trading activities are properly monitored and managed, while supporting environmental protection.

Mr Hakapya having a national framework for carbon trading would help Zambia maximise the benefits of the carbon market, while ensuring that environmental considerations remain at the center of such activities.

“Zambia needs to strengthen its preparedness for a possible El Niño weather phenomenon.  The country has an opportunity to improve on its preparedness by drawing lessons from previous El Niño experiences and adopting strategic measures to respond to climate-related risks,” he added.

He suggested that preparedness should include strengthening climate-risk awareness and adaptation measures across key sectors to enable the country to respond quickly to changing climatic conditions.

Mr Hakapya further called for continued investment in climate resilience and diversification of energy sources to reduce the impact of climate-related shocks on the country.

The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, recently launched the National Carbon Registry, marking a major historic milestone in Zambia’s efforts to regulate carbon trading, strengthen climate action and attract climate finance through a transparent and accountable carbon market.
