The Zambia Land Alliance has called for the fast-track amendment of the Lands Act, highlighting that the change will add value and effect major barriers in the sector.

Speaking in an interview with the Zambian Business Times— ZBT, ZLA Executive Director Patrick Musole said the proposed amendments had undergone extensive consultations through the Zambia Law Development Agency.

“Much of it was enacted in 1995, and it is outdated and does not cover or handle modern population and development demands. We have witnessed an increase in land encroachment and informality, and the amendments will cover such challenges,” he added.

 At the same time, the amends are expected to address land conversion by foreigners while protecting the locals from unfair practices.

 Musole further highlighted that the amends are also scheduled to address and shorten the 99-year lease, allowing locals to reclaim land much sooner and prevent permanent displacement
