ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the Commission joins the nation in mourning Dr. Scott and extends condolences to his family and the people of Zambia.
Following President Hakainde Hichilema’s declaration of national mourning, the Commission noted public inquiries on whether campaigns should be suspended.
Mr. Kasaro clarified that electoral campaigns do not fall under activities of an entertainment nature, which have been suspended during the mourning period.
“Electoral campaign activities will continue as scheduled,” the statement read.
The Commission said its position is consistent with established precedent. During the national mourning for Zambia’s First President, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda in 2021, electoral campaign activities also continued.
While campaigns proceed, ECZ urged all political parties, candidates, and supporters to conduct themselves appropriately.
“Political parties, candidates and their supporters are urged to conduct their campaigns in a dignified, respectful and peaceful manner, mindful of the solemnity of the national mourning period,” Mr. Kasaro said.
The Commission further reminded all stakeholders to continue adhering to the Electoral Code of Conduct and all applicable electoral laws and regulations during this period.
