ECZ CLARIFIES KEEMBE NUMBERS, ANNOUNCES NEXT BATCH OF RESULTS

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has moved quickly to clear up confusion over the Keembe East and Keembe West constituency results, demonstrating transparency after a minor error during this morning’s announcements.

The Commission explained that Keembe East had been read out twice in the first batch of results, owing to a duplicated results sheet. What should have been announced in the second instance was in fact Keembe West.

The ECZ Chairperson confirmed that the consolidated national figures released earlier remained correct, as they had already included the Keembe West results in the totals. To set the record straight, the Commission then formally read out the Keembe West results and corrected the constituency record.

In openly acknowledging, and apologising for the mistake and moving swiftly to fix it, the Commission underlined its commitment to a transparent and credible process.

With the correction made, the position after 70 of 226 constituencies stands with President Hakainde Hichilema leading on 626,434 votes to Brian Mundubile’s 505,795.

The Commission is now proceeding with the second batch of results due to be announced today, as the count continues across the country.
