ZAMBIA Vice President Mutale Nalumango has once again made history by walking away unscathed from a violent aviation accident on July 9, 2026.
The high-profile crash in Nakonde District, marks the second time the veteran politician has narrowly escaped death inside a helicopter.
For many Zambians, the mechanical disaster immediately echoed a terrifying, politically charged ambush she survived alongside the late former first lady Maureen Mwanawasa a decade earlier.
The 2015 Shiwang’andu political ambush in January 2015, during the highly volatile presidential by-election campaign period following the death of President Michael Sata, Dr Nalumango was serving as the National chairperson for the then opposition United Party for National Development (UPND).
Dr Nalumango had teamed up with Dr Mwanawasa, Patrick Mucheleka and Felix Mutati to mobilise voters in the Northern circuit—a staunch stronghold of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) then
As their chartered civilian helicopter prepared to touch down on a school sports field in Shiwang’andu District, Muchinga Province, a hostile mob of armed PF cadres swarmed the landing zone.
Armed with pangas (machetes), stones and catapults, the cadres launched a coordinated assault to stop the opposition leaders from setting foot in the area.
Elements of the mob even attempted to petrol bomb the aircraft with Molotov cocktails.
With the helicopter taking heavy fire from stones and the safety of the aircraft severely compromised, the pilot realised landing meant certain death.
He aborted the touchdown and executed an immediate, emergency take-off to save the chopper.
Because the aircraft had to flee instantly, Dr Nalumango and Dr Mwanawasa were left stranded on the ground amidst a raging riot.
The two prominent women leaders were forced to run for their lives into the dense nearby bushes to escape the bloodthirsty cadres.
They navigated through rough terrain to a safer village location while local police engaged in running battles with the rioters for nearly an hour.
Dr Mwanawasa later famously decried the incident declaring that political thuggery had turned the nation into a failing State.
The 2026 Nakonde Helicopter Crash eleven years later, on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Dr Nalumango—now the Vice President of Zambia—faced the skies of Muchinga Province once again during an official campaign tour ahead of the upcoming August 13 general elections.
After addresses at a packed political rally in the border town of Nakonde, Dr Nalumango and her seven-member entourage boarded a Zambia Air Force (ZAF) military helicopter.
As the aircraft lifted off from the Nakonde School Grounds, it immediately encountered a severe technical malfunction.
According to eyewitness accounts and local video footage, the helicopter struggled to gain altitude and failed to clear the surrounding tree line.
Just moments after leaving the ground, the chopper nose-dived, clipped a tree, and plummeted back to earth, overturning violently onto its left side.
The impact tore the rotor blades completely off and left the fuselage heavily crumpled.
Despite the severe structural destruction of the military aircraft, a catastrophe was miraculously avoided.
Emergency responders and local residents rushed to the wreckage, safely evacuating all eight people on board.
As a standard medical precaution, Dr Nalumango was rushed to a nearby health facility in Nakonde for routine checks and was promptly discharged in perfect health.
Proving her legendary resilience, she immediately went on air and shared a video message thanking God for watching over her team and boldly declaring that she was already back on the campaign trail.
