Court declares Mwewa winner of Lusaka of Mayoral seat

THE Local Government and Elections Tribunal chaired by Dominic Makalicha has withdrawn the Lusaka Mayoral election petition where Gabriel Kibombwe has petitioned the election and declaration of Chitambala Mwewa as Mayor of Lusaka.

Makalicha has since withdrawn the petition of Gabriel Kibombwe and has declared Chitambala Mwewa as duly elected Mayor of Lusaka.

Earlier, the Tribunal ordered the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to produce all the documents relating to the August 2026 mayoral elections and a witness from the ECZ to testify on the documents.

The Petitioner, Gabriel Kibombwe, Chitambala Mwewa and their lawyers jointly agreed that the petition be withdrawn.

Later during the hearing after an adjournment, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Lawyer, Eric Kamwi, told the tribunal that the parties consented to withdraw the petition by mutual consent.

“You ordered ECZ to produce before the tribunal today, the bundle of documents and to avail the witness to speak to the said bundle, while complying with these orders of the tribunal, the ECZ received considerations from the other parties to the case, that is the Petitioner, Mwewa and their advocates, It was jointly agreed by consent of all the parties that this petition be withdrawn by mutual consent of all the parties,” said Kamwi.

In response, the Tribunal Chairperson, Dominic Makalicha granted leave of application and also acknowledged receipt of the application to withdraw the petition and other documents.

Makalicha has since withdrawn the petition for Kibombwe from the Tribunal and that Mwewa remains duly elected Mayor of Lusaka district.
