The Zambia Police Service has apprehended an 18-year-old female suspect in Lusaka in connection with the alleged assault of a two-year-old child.

According to a statement issued by Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi on September 24, 2026, the suspect was apprehended following a report made by the child’s mother at Kabwata Police Station.

Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was employed as a domestic worker and had been responsible for looking after the child while the mother was at work.

The suspect had reportedly been caring for the child since the child was around 10 months old.

The matter came to light on September 24 after a relative of the child reportedly came across a video on the suspect’s mobile phone in which the suspect allegedly appeared to be whipping the toddler.

The relative subsequently informed the child’s mother, who then reported the matter to police.

Following the report, police apprehended the suspect and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.

The child has since undergone a medical examination, and police said a medical report has been obtained as investigations continue.

The suspect remains in police custody pending formal arrest and charging.

Police have not indicated the specific offence with which the suspect will ultimately be charged, as investigations are still ongoing.

The case has also highlighted concerns around the protection of young children who are placed in the care of domestic workers or other caregivers while parents are away at work.

The Zambia Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children from all forms of abuse and violence, saying reports involving the alleged abuse of children are treated seriously.

Police said appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law against any person found to have committed such offences.

The suspect remains an accused person at this stage, and the allegations have yet to be tested in court.
