Chief Mabumba Challenges Mundubile to Match Campaign Promises with Action

Chief Mabumba of the Ushi people in Mansa District has challenged National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu to ensure that the commitments they are making to Zambians are translated into tangible development if they are elected into office.

The traditional leader delivered the message when Mundubile and his campaign delegation paid a courtesy call on him at his palace in Luapula Province during the party’s campaign tour. While welcoming the opposition leaders, Chief Mabumba said leadership should always be measured by service and delivery rather than political rhetoric.

“Politics is about service,” the chief said. “In my simplest understanding, politics is the science of government. And if it is a science, it must be proved. You prove it by putting aside selfish interests and personal egos, and by placing the nation first.”

He said every leader seeking public office carried the responsibility of honouring the promises made to the electorate, stressing that Zambians expected results once leaders assumed power.

The traditional leader also urged any future government to place greater emphasis on harnessing Zambia’s own natural and economic resources to accelerate national development. He said the country’s wealth should be used to improve the lives of its citizens and reduce dependence on external support.

Chief Mabumba further appealed for the completion of major infrastructure projects that have remained unfinished, particularly roads and higher education facilities. He said such investments were essential for improving connectivity, expanding access to education and stimulating economic growth in underserved areas.

Beyond infrastructure, the chief called on Mundubile and Zulu to take a firm public stand against tribalism, warning that political competition should never come at the expense of national unity. He urged leaders to promote inclusion and peaceful coexistence throughout the campaign period and beyond.

Anchoring his appeal in Zambia’s founding values, Chief Mabumba reminded the NRPUP leaders of the enduring relevance of the “One Zambia, One Nation” philosophy introduced by Zambia’s First Republican President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, describing it as a principle that has helped preserve peace and unity since independence.

The chief also welcomed efforts by opposition leaders to work together, saying cooperation in pursuit of the national interest should be encouraged. Referring to recent political developments, he commended leaders who were prepared to put country before personal ambition.

“I heard your statement clearly. You said, ‘I am with Kalaba, but you should do the right thing.’ There is nothing wrong with that statement,” Chief Mabumba said, adding that politics should never become an obstacle to making decisions that benefit the nation.

The courtesy call formed part of the NRPUP’s engagement with traditional leaders as the party continues campaigning across the country ahead of the 13 August General Election. As the campaign intensifies, Chief Mabumba’s message served as a reminder that election promises create expectations which citizens will ultimately judge by the actions of those elected to govern.
