Last season’s Super League runner-up for the Golden Boot, Albert Kangwanda, secured a lucrative move to Tanzanian Champions Young Africans (Yanga SC) from ABSA Cup winners Red Arrows.

 However, the switch is automatically raising a comparison between him and veteran attacking midfielder Clatous Chama, who has been superior and has become a household name for both Yanga and current club Singida Blackstars. Kangwanda excited fans when he scored 10 goals the entire last season and won the player of the season award, a feat that obviously esteemed his profile.

 Commenting on the transfer, football analyst Moses Mpundu observed that Kangwanda has not fully proved himself despite the 10-goal feat. “He has featured for several clubs outside the country, including Al Hilal (Sudan) and Gorica (Croatia), but he did not succeed. The Tanzanian terrain is different; our hope and belief is that he succeeds.”

Mpundu acknowledged that the chances of Kangwanda making it big in the league are 50/50, especially since Yanga is a top club and the demands are quite hefty. Mpundu warned that Kangwanda must up his game and ensure that he maintains having the first-team call-up rather than risking sitting on the bench. He revealed that the player has rarely contributed to the nation, and his switch might worsen the situation.

Mpundu further observed that players who struggle to make a mark at the national team usually struggle when they play outside. “Most players who have gone in that nature find it difficult because of the difference in terrain, but we hope that he makes it and gets a spot in the national team.”
