Binwell Mpundu warns of turbulent economic times ahead

FORMER Nkana Member of Parliament Binwell Mpundu has warned Zambians to brace themselves for what he describes as difficult and turbulent economic times, urging citizens to tighten their belts and avoid reckless spending.

Mpundu says Zambia could face serious economic challenges in the coming months, including difficulties in paying civil servants, farmers and suppliers of goods and services.

He has challenged Zambians to take a screenshot of his warning and revisit it in December to assess whether the government will have been able to meet its financial obligations.

“Please screenshot this and let’s talk in December and tell if your government will be able to pay civil servants on time and if they will be able to pay for goods and services, let alone afford to pay farmers,” Mpundu said.

Mpundu also claims that Zambia’s foreign reserves are not as strong as being portrayed, alleging that the reported reserves “do not exist anywhere.”

He has further warned that the Kwacha could come under pressure in the coming months.

“I’m not a prophet like Miracle Jay Banda, but I have spent 20 years on the political scene and with my experience I can tell you very confidently that we are about to face turbulent times,” he said

Mpundu attributes his concerns, in part, to what he describes as the government’s focus on dealing with political opponents and individuals perceived to have supported them following the elections.

He cites the arrests of Brian Mundubile and Makebi Zulu, as well as what he alleges are actions against businesses and media organisations, as examples of what he calls “post-election madness.”

Mpundu alleges that some businesses and media organisations are being targeted because they are perceived to have supported the opposition.

He also alleges that elected Members of Parliament have been abducted and tortured, citing Lukas Simumba of Nakonde and Faith Munthali of Mafinga.

The allegations regarding the alleged targeting of businesses and media organisations, as well as the alleged abductions and torture of MPs, are claims made by Mpundu and have not been independently verified.

Mpundu further warns that international institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Union, could be less forthcoming with support for Zambia.

He attributes this possibility to what he describes as insults directed at the institutions by some individuals.

Mpundu says the situation can still be corrected if President Hakainde Hichilema sets aside what he describes as pride and takes steps to address what he calls the “post-election madness.”

He has urged Zambians to prepare for what he believes could be difficult months ahead

“May God help us all, otherwise tighten your belts, don’t spend recklessly. Keep some for the days ahead,” Mpundu said.
