Two newly elected Members of Parliament in Mufulira district have officially taken their oath of office as members of the Mufulira Municipal Council during a swearing-in ceremony conducted by Magistrate Mercy Chabu.

Those sworn in during the ceremony were United Party for National Development’s (UPND) Mufulira Central Member of Parliament, Elijah Biyete and Independent Kankoyo Member of Parliament, Edward Chomba.

Speaking after being sworn in, Mr Biyete pledged a continuous presence in his constituency and strict accountability for all local development projects.

He called for strong inter-constituency collaboration to transform Mufulira district.

He reassured residents that he will remain grounded within the district to fulfill the campaign promises he made before his election.

“I want to assure residents of Mufulira Central that I will always be available in the constituency and every time I am in Mufulira, I will be a field worker to ensure I deliver what I promised to them,” he said.

Mr Biyete emphasised that transparency and accountability will be central during his tenure of office, stating that he will oversee and remain accountable for every project undertaken in the constituency.

“As part of the Grow Zambia agenda, I have to be accountable as a leader and I must have integrity,” he said.

Highlighting the shared challenges facing the district, Mr Biyete noted that critical development issues cut across all three constituencies in Mufulira and cannot be solved in isolation.

He pledged readiness to collaborate closely with the district’s two other Members of Parliament to pool ideas and resources for large scale projects that require joint parliamentary effort.

Meanwhile, Kankoyo Independent Member of Parliament, Edward Chomba, declared that the political season has ended and that the focus must now shift entirely from partisan competition to service delivery.

“Despite scooping the seat, there are no winners or losers in politics,” Bishop Chomba stated, adding that, “the time for politics is over, and it is time for development”.

Bishop Chomba has since urged all stakeholders, community members, and political actors across Kankoyo to set aside rivalries and work together, particularly to uplift the constituency.

“This is not the time for criticism, this is the time to bring development to the people of Kankoyo. I am calling upon everybody, young men and women, elderly people, to come and work together,” he added.

Bishop Chomba has further reaffirmed his commitment to working alongside the other two parliamentarians, emphasising that success will be measured by tangible improvements in the daily lives of residents.

The third lawmaker in the district, Kantanshi Member of Parliament under the Resolute Party, was not sworn in as he was unavailable and is scheduled to take his oath at a later date.
