ZCCM Investments Holdings (ZCCM-IH) is in discussions with the Ministry of Mines on plans to establish gold trading markets in areas where gold mining is being formalised.

ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson Phesto Musonda says the initiative is aimed at supporting the formalisation of Zambia’s gold and manganese mining sectors, in line with the government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s mining industry.

Mr. Musonda described the proposed markets as a key part of the government’s broader economic agenda, saying they will help create structured and transparent trading opportunities for small-scale miners.

He further revealed that the Ministry of Mines has so far trained local miners and issued mining licences to between 700 and 1,000 cooperatives, particularly in gold-rich areas such as Mufumbwe.

The initiative is expected to improve market access for miners, encourage legal trade, and boost economic growth through increased participation in the formal mining sector.
