US authorities have seized more than 2 pounds of dead African mice intended for human consumption and 22 pounds of beef from a traveler arriving from Malawi at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Photos released by US Customs and Border Protection show the mice wrapped in pages of Malawi’s The Nation newspaper.

CBP officials intercepted the items during a routine baggage inspection. The mice and beef were confiscated in accordance with US agricultural import regulations, which restrict the entry of meat and wildlife products to prevent disease.

Authorities did not release the name of the traveler. No charges have been announced.

The seizure has drawn attention online, with many Malawians reacting with a mix of shock and humor to the photos of the mice packaged in local newspaper.
