A 23- year- old woman of Ikelenge District of North-Western Province has died after she was struck on the neck by a cellphone battery that exploded as a result of the fire.

North-Western Province Commissioner of Police, Brighton Mwale, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Solwezi yesterday and identified the victim as Jean Ntambu aged 22 of Matoka village.

He said the matter was reported on July 22, 2026 by the victim’s brother, Guard Ntambu, aged 26, that his young sister, Jean Ntambu, aged 23, of the same abode, died after she was struck by a cell phone battery that exploded on the fire and caused her to sustain a deep cut on her neck at about 18:00 hours at Matoka village.

Mr Siwale said brief facts of the matter are that on 22nd July, 2026 at about 17:00 hours the deceased was cleaning the surrounding and hipped the dirty at one point and set it on fire.

He explained that while burning the dirt, the deceased sat near the fire without realising that amongst the dirt was a dead cell phone battery which exploded and some particles hit her on her neck causing her to sustain a deep cut and heavy bleeding.

Mr Siwale said the victim was rushed to a rural health post where she was attended to and later transferred to Kalene Mission Hospital where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“Acting on the report police rushed to Ikelenge Rural Health Post where the victim was rushed to and found the health personnel attending to the victim, and the condition was critical. A deep cut on the neck and severe bleeding was observed,” Mr Siwale said.

He said the body of the deceased has since been deposited in Kalene Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination and burial.

Mr Siwale has warned members of the public to be mindful in the manner and way they dispose of gadgets waste to avoid similar unfortunate circumstances in their communities in the future.
