President Hakainde Hichilema met with two citizens whose extraordinary journeys to Lusaka captured national attention, describing the occasion as a reflection of the unity and shared citizenship that bind Zambians together.

The President hosted Maggie Sapatu of Mwinilunga District and Jeremiah Tembo of Lusangazi, who both travelled long distances to demonstrate their support and appreciation.

President Hichilema said the three sat down and shared a meal together.

“We serve 21 million Zambians and every citizen brings something important to the table. Maggie Sapato walked all the way from Mwinilunga to bring us village chicken and Jeremiah Tembo cycled from Lusangazi to attend our inauguration. Today we sat and ate together, as fellow citizens. The best is yet to come,” the President said.

Maggie Sapatu made headlines after walking nearly 1,000 kilometres from Mwinilunga to Lusaka to present two village chickens to President Hichilema. The gift carried cultural significance, as among the Lunda people, giving a chicken is regarded as a traditional gesture of deep respect, admiration, gratitude and kindness.

Following her lengthy journey, Sapatu arrived at the gates of State House, where she was assisted by members of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) before eventually being able to present her gift.

Jeremiah Tembo also drew attention after cycling from Lusangazi District in Eastern Province to Lusaka to attend President Hichilema’s inauguration. His determination and perseverance were widely noted as he undertook the long journey to witness the historic event.

The meeting at State House brought together the President and the two citizens whose personal sacrifices and journeys had become symbols of commitment and participation in national affairs.

President Hichilema said the occasion demonstrated that Zambia’s strength lies in its people and that every citizen has a role to play in the country’s development.
