United Party for National Development (UPND) Eastern Province Chairperson, Peter Phiri, says President Hakainde Hichilema’s ongoing public gatherings in Eastern Province has enabled the ruling party to engage communities and highlight government developmental projects.

Mr Phiri said the President’s second campaign visit to the province has provided an opportunity for people to interact directly with the Head of State and discuss issues affecting their communities.

He also commended the peaceful conduct of the 2026 General Election campaigns, saying political parties have largely campaigned without violence.

Mr Phiri attributed the calm atmosphere to what he described as the government’s commitment to peaceful campaigns and urged voters to maintain peace before, during and after polling day.

He said residents in the province have expressed appreciation for government programmes such as the Free Education, the School Feeding Programme and the enhanced Social Cash Transfer scheme.

Mr Phiri said the Government has also outlined a number of infrastructure projects for Eastern Province, including the planned upgrading of roads.

He said President Hichilema has indicated that the Chipata-Lundazi Road project has been awarded to a contractor who has already mobilized to site.

Mr Phiri further said the President has announced plans to upgrade sections of the road network in Chipata into a dual carriageway to help ease traffic congestion.

He added that the UPND intends to continue using the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to finance community projects, improve feeder roads and expand development initiatives across the province.

Mr Phiri also cited the need to address human-wildlife conflict in areas bordering protected wildlife habitats, saying the government should strengthen measures to protect communities and support affected families.

Meanwhile, he urged voters in Eastern Province to support President Hichilema and UPND candidates in the August 13 General Election, arguing that the party has delivered on key development programmes during its time in office.

The President is expected to address campaign rallies in Kasenengwa, Chipangali and later Mfuwe as part of his campaign tour of Eastern Province.
