POLICE have warned the public against creating and sharing social media content intended to incite violence and threaten peace and public order.

Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the service was concerned about offensive and disrespectful remarks being circulated online, including those directed at President Hakainde Hichilema. Chilabi said such acts constitute criminal offenses and are being investigated by digital forensic officers. Those found culpable will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law. “The public is reminded that freedom of expression is a constitutional right. However, this right must be exercised within the confines of the law,” Chilabi said. “It does not protect unlawful conduct, including incitement to violence, promotion of tribal hatred, threats, hate speech, or other forms of unlawful communication.” Police urged members of the public to refrain from creating or circulating content that promotes tribal hatred, incites violence, or threatens public safety. Citizens were also encouraged to report any suspected unlawful activity to the nearest police station. “The service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public safety, maintaining law and order, and enforcing the law fairly and firmly.” he said.
