Lusaka lawyer and former mayoral candidate Simon Mulenga Mwila has broken his silence following the recent elections, saying he is taking time to reflect on his political future, rebuild his life and seek God’s guidance before making his next move.

Mwila, who contested the Lusaka mayoral seat as an independent candidate, said several people had contacted him because of his silence and concerns about his wellbeing.

He assured those who had reached out that he is “very much okay and alive”, explaining that he had deliberately chosen to remain quiet while observing developments and trying to find his footing after the election.

Looking back at the campaign, Mwila said he remains proud of what he managed to achieve at the age of 35 despite contesting without serious financial sponsorship or the machinery of a political party behind him.

The lawyer said much of his campaign was financed through personal sacrifice, revealing that at one point he obtained a loan from a friend using his BMW and Mercedes-Benz vehicles as security.

According to Mwila, he has since lost both vehicles.

He also spoke about individuals who had promised to financially support his campaign but later stopped responding to his calls as the election progressed.

Despite the experience, Mwila said he holds no bitterness towards those who did not provide the support they had promised.

“That is life, and I have no bitterness towards anyone. Nobody owes me anything,” he said.

Mwila said he was nevertheless encouraged by the number of votes he managed to secure as an independent candidate, particularly given that he entered the race without the financial backing and political structures available to established parties.

He further said his performance was significant to him because, according to his assessment, he received more votes than opposition presidential figures, with Brian Mundubile being the only opposition leader who finished ahead of him in terms of numbers.

“For someone who went into that election largely on his own, I cannot ignore what that result means,” Mwila said.

The election has also left Mwila contemplating several possible directions for his future.

Among the options he is considering are establishing his own law firm and concentrating on rebuilding his legal career, continuing in opposition politics or potentially working with the UPND, a party he acknowledges having criticised for years.

Mwila said the possibility of working with the ruling party is complicated by the fact that he also has friends within UPND, including Members of Parliament and individuals holding influential positions.

“These are not small decisions,” he said.

As a Catholic and Christian, Mwila said he has decided to take time to pray and reflect before making any major political or professional decision.

He said he does not want his next move to be driven by anger, disappointment, excitement, pressure or convenience.

Instead, Mwila wants to make a decision that leaves him at peace with God and himself.

“For now, I will remain quiet, observe, pray and rebuild,” he said.

His message comes as several politicians and independent candidates who participated in the recent elections begin reflecting on their performances and considering their next political steps.

For Mwila, the period after the Lusaka mayoral contest appears to be one of personal reflection and rebuilding rather than immediate political confrontation.

He thanked everyone who had contacted him to check on his wellbeing, saying he genuinely appreciated the concern and support.

Mwila concluded by saying he remains optimistic about the future and believes that God will guide what he described as the next chapter of his life.
