More than 70,000 learners in 170 government primary and secondary schools across Northern, Southern and Eastern provinces have benefited from education interventions under the Targeted Improvement for Equitable Education in Zambia (TIEEZ) programme.

Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Kelvin Mambwe, disclosed that over 7,000 learners, 56 percent of them girls, are now enrolled in the Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS) school network.

Speaking during the Empowerment and Development for Girls’ Education (EDGE) Programme in Lusaka, Dr Mambwe said the achievements demonstrate the impact of partnerships in strengthening Zambia’s education system and expanding access to quality education.

He said lasting improvements in education begin in the classroom but must extend across the entire education system.

Dr Mambwe said the collaboration between the Ministry of Education, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and PEAS has strengthened school leadership, improved teaching practices, promoted safeguarding and created better learning environments, particularly for girls and other vulnerable learners.

He explained that between 2021 and 2026, four new PEAS secondary schools were established in Chinsali, Ndola, Chirundu and Sinda, while existing schools were expanded from 30 to 108 classrooms.

Dr Mambwe said the investments have improved access to safe learning spaces, expanded boarding facilities and created opportunities for many young people who would otherwise have been unable to continue their education.

He further noted that the programme has strengthened pre-service teacher preparation by expanding practical training from two to five colleges of education, benefiting hundreds of student teachers before they enter the teaching profession.

Dr Mambwe added that approaches developed through the EDGE programme, including school leadership, school improvement planning, safeguarding, teacher coaching and improved teaching practices, are now informing broader reforms across the country’s education system.

He urged education stakeholders and cooperating partners to continue aligning their efforts with government priorities to build a stronger, more inclusive and sustainable education system that delivers quality learning outcomes for future generations.

PEAS Zambia Country Director, Beatrice Likando said school improvement plans, stronger teacher support and enhanced safeguarding measures have significantly improved the quality of education in Zambia’s schools over the past five years.

Ms Likando said the programme has demonstrated that sustainable improvements in education are achieved when government, cooperating partners and implementing organisations work together towards a common goal.

Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Human Development Team Leader, Nicola Oldham commended government and stakeholders for the milestones recorded in the EDGE Programme.
