Zambia : Mighty Defender Kakungu Jailed For Assault

Mufulira Wanderers defender Bwembya Kakungu has been jailed for six months after being convicted of assault by the Mufulira Court.

The Super Division club confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the former Mighty captain remains detained in prison.

“Mufulira Wanderers Football Club has taken note of the conviction and subsequent six-month prison sentence handed down to our player, Bwembya Kakungu, for assault,” the club board said.

“The Club respects the decision of the Court and wishes to state that violence and assault have no place in Mufulira Wanderers Football Club, football or society.”

Sources close to the player say disciplinary issues negatively affected Kakungu’s performance in the 2025/26 campaign.

After putting in incredible performances in previous seasons, Kakungu, hampered by injuries, did not see match action last term.

Kakungu also has national team experience. In June 2023, he was part of the Chipolopolo squad that faced Kuwait in a friendly match.

The club said it upholds values of discipline, respect and responsible conduct, both on and off the field.

“The Club is reviewing the matter in accordance with its internal policies, the player’s contractual obligations and applicable football regulations,”_ the statement added.

“Any further decision regarding the player’s status will be communicated through the appropriate channels.”

Kakungu has a contract with Mighty stretching to June 2027.
