Zambia : Kawana Reminds Media Of Their Responsibilities

Media houses in Zambia have been advised to exercise professionalism and responsibility as they cover the forthcoming general elections in the country

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary, Thabo Kawana urged journalists and editors to avoid sensational reporting but instead adhere to the ethical principles of journalism by verifying facts, presenting balanced stories, and seeking all sides of an issue before publication or broadcast.

Mr Kawana said at a press briefing in Lusaka that there is a need for journalists to help safeguard peace and national unity during and after elections.

He further cautioned media organisations against publishing misinformation or disinformation, saying responsible journalism is essential during the electoral period.

He said the country has entered a critical period hence the media should ensure that their reporting does not fuel tension or confusion.

Mr Kawana also reminded media houses that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) is the only official body mandated to announce election results.

He further advised media organisations to refrain from broadcasting or publishing unofficial election tallies and instead rely solely on results officially released by the ECZ.

Mr Kawana warned that publishing unofficial results, including exit polls or figures based on Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT), could create unnecessary confusion among the public.

Meanwhile, Mr Kawana has expressed concern over the conduct of some named broadcasting stations, stating that their recent actions leave much to be desired.

The Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary has since called on the management of the named media houses to closely monitor the work of their reporters and editors to ensure compliance with professional and ethical standards throughout the election period.
