Mr Shula, who teaches at Kasama Central Day Secondary School, returned to his former school, Kasonde Chisuna Primary, earlier this month with the gesture aimed at strengthening the reading culture among pupils in rural areas.
In a follow up spot check conducted at Kasama Primary School, both pupils and teachers testified that the donated books have already begun to transform learning outcomes.
They noted that reading confidence and general school performance have improved among learners.
Kasama Primary School Headteacher, Emelda Mwaba confirmed the development, describing the initiative as a timely supplement to government’s Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC).
During the visit, grade six pupil Astrida Chimfwembe and her counterpart Mwape Mulusa confidently demonstrated their reading abilities by fluently reading from one of the donated books, offering clear evidence of the project’s positive impact.
“I can now read better because of these books. They make learning easier and more enjoyable. The books are helping us understand our lessons more clearly,” the pupils said.
Mr, Shula explained that his long-term vision is to roll out the distribution of books across the province and eventually extend the initiative countrywide, ensuring that every child whether in town or in the remotest village has access to quality learning materials.
“The idea is to tackle the low reading culture among pupils, especially in rural areas. These books are meant to give children the confidence to read and catch up with their peers,” Mr Shula said.
Teachers and pupils alike expressed gratitude, saying the project is already inspiring learners to embrace reading and improve their academic performance.
