A 28-year-old cyclist has died after he was hit by an ambulance in a fatal road traffic accident at Jiwundu Junction along the Mutanda–Mwinilunga Road in Kalumbila District.

The accident occurred on Monday, July 20, 2026, at around 20:30 hours.

North-Western Province Commissioner of Police Brighton Siwale said the deceased has been identified as Joseph Namanga of Jiwundu Junction area who was riding a Buffalo bicycle from east to west when he was struck by an ambulance travelling in the same direction.

Mr Siwale said the ambulance involved in the accident was a Nissan Patrol, registration number GRZ 685 CX.

Mr Siwale said preliminary investigations indicate that the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed before it veered off the road to the extreme left side and hit the cyclist.

He said the deceased sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot, while the driver escaped unhurt.

“The body of the deceased was picked and deposited at Wumi Mini Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination,” Mr Siwale said.

He added that the ambulance sustained damage to its left headlamp and bonnet, while the bicycle was extensively damaged.

Mr Siwale further said both the ambulance and the bicycle have been impounded at Kalumbila Police Station pending inspection by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), while police have instituted investigations into the cause of the accident.
