President Hakainde Hichilema has rejected claims that Zambia is in crisis after the polls, saying disgruntled and selfish individuals are creating a false impression of tension and scaring off the investors the Government has worked to attract.
The President spoke at State House in Lusaka yesterday during the swearing-in of Patricia Malaila as Deputy Auditor-General for the Audit Division at the Office of the Auditor-General. He used the occasion to question the motives of people, at home and abroad, who use social media to portray the country in a bad light, and he opened with an appeal.
“Let’s love our country; let’s not do things that damage our country consciously,” Mr Hichilema said.
He follows what is posted online, he said, and some of it is doing harm without those posting it realising. The Head of State then put the question to them directly.
“I scan social media, the kind of stuff that is thrown in there, you don’t realise what you are doing; you are scaring off an investor we have worked so hard to attract. What is your intention?” he asked.
The effect of such posts, the President said, is to make investors, whether domestic, regional or international, believe that something is wrong in Zambia. Nothing is, he insisted, and the country had already settled the matter at the ballot box.
“There is no issue in this country. We have had an election, Zambians voted, decisions are made by Zambians. We move on. What is this hullabaloo, creating a crisis where there is none?” he said.
Some of the people painting the country in a negative light had selfish interests, he said, because they were unhappy that they did not occupy certain public offices. Citizens who claim to love Zambia, he added, should stop peddling falsehoods, and he then turned to what follows when the law is crossed.
“Let us not have that mentality; let’s love this country, focus on the work ahead of us, let’s stay within the law. If you veer off the law, then you will pay. It doesn’t matter how old you are; the law does not recognise age, it recognises wrongdoing,” he said.
The appeal was not limited to those at home. Zambians living abroad were urged to remain law-abiding and to avoid conduct that could harm the country’s reputation.
The office he holds also featured in the address. State House, the President said, must stay focused on government business and national development, and he asked that it not be turned into something else.
“Let’s not dilute this office and make it something else, this office is sacred; it’s for serious work,” he said.
At the same ceremony, the Head of State called on public officers to treat public money with care, saying every kwacha saved is critical to the success of the Grow Zambia Agenda.
On the economy, Mr Hichilema said falling inflation and rising growth were evidence that the country was moving in the right direction. He asked citizens to support efforts to sustain the momentum.
Figures from the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) show inflation at 6.2 per cent in August, down from 6.5 per cent in July. The President said the country had come a long way from the high inflation levels recorded when he assumed office in 2021.
Growth was the second marker he pointed to. ZamStats data show the economy expanded by 7.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2026, compared with 4.5 per cent in the same period last year, and he urged Zambians to read the signs.
“You must read the writing on the wall, there’s something good happening in this country and be part of that good,” the President said.
Citizens were asked to recognise the progress made so far and to contribute to the implementation of the Grow Zambia Agenda. Careless actions, he warned, could undermine the gains being recorded, and he closed with a final appeal.
“Let us accelerate this growth, let us not damage the growth by our carelessness as citizens. Then we will show love to this nation called Zambia,” he said.
The latest ZamStats monthly bulletin, released on Thursday, puts second-quarter growth at 7.2 per cent, slightly below the 7.9 per cent recorded in the same quarter of 2025. It also shows annual inflation easing to 6.1 per cent in September from 6.2 per cent in August.
