Zambia : Govt To Accelerate Collaboration Between UNZA, Oxford University

Government says it will accelerate collaboration between the University of Zambia (UNZA), Oxford University and other institutions to drive business, marketing and research opportunities for Zambia.

Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa said Cabinet has welcomed the proposal for Oxford to become a hub for Zambia’s marketing and business engagement.

Mr Kangwa was speaking during a courtesy call by Oxford University Lord Mayor Chewe Munkonge.

“To accelerate that, I think if the discussion has been started, all we have to do is accelerate the process and we’ll take note of that,” Mr Kangwa said during a press briefing.

He noted that President Hakainde Hichilema is effectively the chief marketing officer of the country and that the idea of leveraging Oxford for marketing and business aligns with Cabinet’s position.

“We also welcome the idea of Oxford becoming where we can do some marketing and business, he said

Mr Kangwa said government will work with the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) in partnership with Zambia’s High Commission in the UK, Oxford University and other universities to explore concrete programs.

“So we will work with that and see if through ZDA, we can work with our High Commission and Oxford University, and even the other university, and see what we can do with Oxford.

The Secretary to the Cabinet said strengthening ties with globally ranked institutions such as Oxford will help position Zambia for investment, skills transfer and trade promotion, while also creating opportunities for UNZA students and researchers.

Oxford University Lord Mayor Chewe Munkonge pledged to strengthen ties between Zambia and the United Kingdom through city twinning, economic promotion, and closer university partnerships, and has accepted an offer to serve as an ambassador for the University of Zambia (UNZA).

Mr Munkonge said her priority is to work with universities to expand collaboration and market Zambia globally.

“The other one is on the universities, they can come under training, but more importantly, I know the relationship is already there between the University of Zambia and Oxford University.

 When we met with the Vice-Chancellor, he was also proposing that I should become an ambassador for the University of Zambia,”Mr Munkonge said.

“I thought that role would be important if I can advocate and market the University of Zambia, and ultimately Zambia and all the universities that are on the world market in terms of investment and research,” he said

He added that on city-to-city cooperation, the Lord Mayor said discussions are already underway to twin Lusaka and Oxford.

“I know there are a lot of Zambian students, organizations, and smaller organizations in Oxford, so it’s just a matter of bringing them together,” he said.
