Lusaka District Commissioner, Rosa Kayuni has reiterated government’s call on expectant mothers to utilise health facilities in the district to prevent maternal mortality.

Ms Kayuni said government has built maternity annexes in the district to ensure that no woman dies during or after giving birth.

She was speaking during the launch of the polio round 3 vaccinations in Lusaka’s Mandevu Township.

“The new dawn government considers health as a strategic investment, as can be seen in the consistent recruitment of healthcare workers from 2022 to date, construction of maternity annexes, health posts, and health centres and hospitals,” she said.

Ms Kayuni added that the provision of adequate medicines and medical supplies in the health facilities is also a testament of government’s commitment to providing quality health services to the citizenry in the district and the country at large.

The District Commissioner said Lusaka District remains at high risk of importation and transmission of polio virus due to increased population movements.

She called for concerted efforts from all the stakeholders to help ensure that all eligible children are vaccinated against polio.

She also called on communities to be vigilant and get information about measles prevention.

Ms Kayuni said measles remains a significant public health threat in the district.

“I am appealing to stakeholders, the local authority and other sectors to come on board to help mitigate the spread of measles in the district,” she said.

Speaking earlier, Mandevu Subdistrict Public Health Specialist, Dr Chota Chishimba said the launched polio campaign is a critical step in protecting children, safeguarding families and moving communities closer to a polio free future.

“Let us adhere to the vaccination protocol of reaching every child, follow safety and cold-chain procedures, maintain accurate records, and engage communities. Together we can close immunity gaps and prevent any resurgence of disease,” she said.

Representing the District Director for health services, Astridah Maseka, Acting Public Health Specialist, Dr Kelvin Sinkala echoed the need for support from all stakeholders if the vaccination exercise is to be successful.

The vaccination exercise which commenced on 21st July, 2026, ending on the 24th July, 2026 is being undertaken under the theme: “Polio is preventable, get your child vaccinated.”
