The Hunger Project – Zambia has partnered with the government to launch an additional food security project in Sinda District of Eastern Province, called Food Second Project, valued at K5.8 Million.

The move compliments the Epicenter initiative being implemented in Ching’ombe and Kamwaza Wards in Sinda.

The two-year Australian Donor Funded Food Second Project, targets to empower 530 farmers with agricultural inputs and support.

Sinda District Commissioner, David Tembo, who officiated at the launch ‎has acknowledged the massive support The Hunger Project – Zambia (THP-Z) has demonstrated in the district towards improving the livelihoods of the locals.

Mr Tembo noted that THP-Z’s Water First Project while implementing an Epicenter, has complimented government’s efforts in curbing the water crisis in rural Sinda.

The project has seen 16 water schemes being constructed across Ching’ombe and Kamwaza Wards.

The District Commissioner said the Food Second Project will not only benefit the 530 farmer households that have been targeted, but the entire district as it stands to gain economically, with a strengthened household food security.

Mr Tembo, who boasted of Sinda’s many successes in various sectors such as agriculture and education, has assured THP-Z and its donors that the project will be successful.

“I want to express my gratitude to the various cooperating partners who have been complimenting government efforts in various sectors. My office further pledges the government’s full support towards the implementation of projects in the district,” he indicated.

And The Hunger Project – Zambia Country Director, Samuel Mutambo, also stated that the Food Second Project is aiming at strengthening food security not only in the two wards but the entire district.

‎Mr Mutambo noted that with hands put together, ensuring the project’s success to achieve greatness is the goal.

“The project intends to help communities become food secure as it aims at supplying targeted farmers with hybrid maize, beans and ground nuts seeds with fertilisers and other agricultural requirements and tools for production,” he disclosed.

He also revealed that, working with the Department of Agriculture, the farmers will be trained in climate smart agricultural practices as they are currently limited with what they can produce due to climate change effects.

“I am optimistic that once the project is running, malnutrition and poverty will drop to the lowest numbers, if not curbed,” he said.

He reiterated that his organisation remains committed to‎ complimenting government’s efforts of ensuring better livelihoods for the marginalised population.
