Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer, Paul Shalala, said over one hundred metric tonnes of maize were produced last year by the defence forces, emphasising that investments have been made across the security wings in the country to support the government’s production target.
Speaking on the sidelines of this year’s 98th Agricultural and Commercial Show in Lusaka, Mr Shalala highlighted that all three branches of the Ministry of Defence have heavily invested in maize production, utilising centre pivots to contribute towards the national goal of 10 million metric tonnes per year, as set by President Hakainde Hichilema.
He also noted the efforts of the Zambia Air Force, who also recently launched a mealie meal brand, is making strides in poultry farming by hatching thousands of chicks daily at the Twin Palm base in Lusaka.
Mr Shalala further highlighted that the Zambia National Service, a leader in fish farming, is also making notable progress, particularly in areas such as Chief Chipepo’s region, where fish farming is expanding.
He stressed that the national defense forces play a vital role in the country’s development, food security, and GDP growth through job creation.
“The Ministry of Defence is not only responsible for national security but also contributes significantly to national development through its various ventures, producing a wide range of products.
He disclosed that the Ministry of Defence has invested heavily in innovation through its company, ZAMCAPITOL, which manufactures products like hammer mills and saw mills.
Mr Shalala explained that the ministry’s participation at the agriculture show, aims to bridge the gap between civilians and military personnel by showcasing their activities and achievements through displays at the exhibition.
