Zambia : Government Reaffirms Commitment To Empowering The Girl Child

 Government has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering the girl child.

Senga Hill District Commissioner Elizabeth Goma says government through various interventions in the education sector among them the keeping girls in school initiative, is empowering the girl child.

The District Commissioner said this when she officiated at the 2026 Keeping Girls in School (KGS) Academic Symposium in Senga Hill District.

Ms Goma observed that many girls enrolled under the Keeping Girls in School programme continue to face social and academic challenges arising from vulnerable backgrounds, which often affect their academic performance.

She said the annual symposium forms part of the Case Management System (CMS) interventions designed to improve learning outcomes by creating a platform where implementing schools can exchange best practices on academic achievement.

“The symposium seeks to promote academic excellence among Keeping Girls in School implementing schools while contributing to the development of quality human capital for national development,” she said.

She noted that the programme also provides an opportunity for professionals from various sectors to mentor girls and inspire them to pursue ambitious career paths, especially that beneficiaries of the KGS programme have access to scholarships for tertiary education upon successful completion of secondary school.

Speaking earlier, Senga Hill District Education Board Secretary Charity Lungu described the symposium as an important platform that connects learners with civic leaders and stakeholders who provide mentorship and guidance.

Ms Lungu said although many girls face numerous obstacles in life, education remains the most effective tool for overcoming those challenges.

“Girls should remain focused on their education because there is a time for schooling and a time for marriage, and education helps address many challenges girls face,” she said.

She further encouraged the learners to remember the four important stages represented by a girl’s attire showcased at the event.

“The four types of uniform a girl child can wear are the school uniform, the graduation gown, the wedding dress and the maternity dress. Each has its rightful time,” she said.

Ms Lungu disclosed that Senga Hill became a Keeping Girls in School implementing district in 2025 and currently has 1,297 beneficiaries.

She added that the district has distributed 10 bicycles to beneficiaries, received 2,283 packs of disposable sanitary towels and benefited from education grants amounting to K718,400 in 2025 and K680,000 in 2026 to support 850 learners.

“We are grateful for this support, which continues to transform the lives of vulnerable girls through education,” she said.

Meanwhile, A Grade 12 pupil at Senga Hill Boarding Secondary School, Violet Namwila, expressed gratitude to the government and its partners for investing in the education of the girl child.

“The commitment to empowering girls through education is making a lasting difference in our lives. Your guidance and encouragement have inspired us to dream bigger, work harder and become the leaders of tomorrow,” she said.

Ms Namwila urged fellow beneficiaries to remain focused, confident and determined to achieve their academic and career aspirations by putting into practice the lessons learnt during the symposium.

The symposium, was held at Senga Hill Boarding Secondary School under the theme “Empowering Girls – Creating Leaders for Tomorrow,” .

The symposium brought together government officials, education stakeholders, professionals and beneficiaries of the Keeping Girls in School programme to promote academic excellence, mentorship and career development.
