Government has commenced the distribution of fertiliser and seed packs under the Wetlands Cropping Programme, being implemented through the Food Security Pack Programme in Mpika District of Muchinga Province.

Mpika District Commissioner David Siame says the distribution exercise has started in Chailo Zone, where 200 beneficiaries have so far received farming inputs.

Mr Siame said the exercise is expected to be completed by Wednesday next week.

He said more than 1,000 vulnerable but viable households in Mpika District are earmarked to receive fertiliser and vegetable seed packs under the Wetlands Cropping Programme.

Mr Siame described the programme as an encouraging initiative aimed at improving household food security in the district.

He said Government remains committed to supporting vulnerable but viable households in Mpika District.

He explained that programmes of this nature are intended to cushion families against food insecurity while promoting sustainable agricultural practices in wetland areas.

And Mpika District Community Development Officer-in-Charge, Precious Lungu, said the inputs will be distributed to beneficiaries in 10 selected Community Welfare Assistance Committees (CWACs) in the district.

Ms Lungu said her department will closely monitor the distribution and implementation of the programme to ensure that the inputs are used for the intended purpose.

She said the involvement of CWACs at community level was intended to enhance transparency and accountability in the selection and verification of beneficiaries.

“Beneficiaries must make good use of the inputs to boost household food production and reduce dependence on relief support,” she said.

Ms Lungu further emphasized that the Wetlands Cropping Programme forms part of broader Government efforts to strengthen food security among vulnerable households in Mpika District and Muchinga Province at large.

Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries from Chibansa area, Matilda Kalounde, thanked Government for providing the farming inputs, saying the support has come at an opportune time.

Ms Kalounde said the inputs will go a long way in improving the livelihoods of vulnerable but viable households.

“This will go a long way in improving the livelihoods of many vulnerable but viable households,” she said.
