Kafue District Commissioner Maurice Hikapulwe says the government is committed to strengthening mental health services at the primary healthcare level throughout the country.

Speaking when he officiated at a Human Rights sensitisation workshop on mental health and caregivers in Kafue, organised by the Mental Health Users Network of Zambia (MHUNZA), Mr Hikapulwe said the country has a Mental Health Act that provides for the protection of persons with psychological and mental disabilities.

Mr Hikapulwe called on the Mental Health Users Network of Zambia (MHUNZA) to continue inspiring persons with mental health conditions to live independently in order to achieve their full potential.

“Government, under the leadership of His Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema, reaffirms its commitment to continuing to strengthen mental health services at the primary healthcare level,” Mr Hikapulwe said.

He said he was pleased to learn that the organisation’s primary focus is to advocate for the protection and promotion of the worth and dignity of people.

“I am made to understand that over the years, MHUNZA has taken up the role of advocating for respect for inborn self-worth, individual autonomy and respect for our differences as part of human diversity,” he said.

Meanwhile, MHUNZA Project Coordinator Francis Phiri said the aim of the workshop was to train people with lived experience of mental health and psychological disabilities to communicate effectively and build media engagement skills, enabling them to advocate for the rights of persons with mental disabilities.
